Interstate Batteries and Midtronics partnered to become pioneers in unveiling conductance technology to the public when we introduced the ED-18. Since that time, other conductance testers have appeared, but none equals the technological capability of the ED-18. The ED-18’s special features make it particularly accurate, effective and user-friendly.
Built-in Battery Temperature Compensation
The ED-18 is one of the few testers with this feature. The infrared temperature sensor measures the battery temperature when the ED-18 is aimed between one and two inches from the top or side of the battery. This allows the ED-18 to compensate its analysis according to the temperature of the battery, resulting in much more accurate test results.
Most Accurate Regional Battery-Life Expectancy & Temperature Range Data
The ED-18’s internal software includes the best available database with average temperature extremes and battery-life data keyed off the zip code entered during the set-up process. The ED-18 uses data provided by Battery Council International (BCI) for 15 different geographical regions throughout North America, accounting for every location in the U.S. and Canada. The data incorporates not only the regional temperature extremes and averages but also the duration of those extremes. The user should discuss this relevant information with the customer.
Attached Thermal Printer
For convenience and ease of operation, the ED-18’s thermal printer is permanently attached. No more hunting down the printer when it’s time to produce a hard copy of the test result. The printed result can be attached to the vehicle work order to ensure that results are communicated to the owner. Most other testers have a separate printer, which is simply inconvenient.
Large, 128 x 64 Pixel LCD Screen with Icon-Based User Interface
The ED-18's large, easy-to-read display makes it easy to navigate through the test process and view results.
“Reports” Function for Tracking Results
The ED-18’s “Reports” functions allow for battery-test tracking and management. Look up “Track Use and Results” under “Implementation” for more details.
Specialized Functions
The ED-18 can perform a variety of other functions that are accessed through the Digital Multi-Meter (Dmm) icon on the main menu. These include: DC voltmeter, AC voltmeter, single-trace oscilloscope and digital IR thermometer. More details on accessing and using these functions can be found on pages 31–33 of the online Instruction Manual.
- Marginality Testing - The ED-18 can determine if a battery is marginal by incorporating voltage, state-of-charge, conductance and battery temperature in an algorithm. A marginal battery is one that may still be starting the vehicle, but that no longer meets is rated specification and is likely to fail in the foreseeable future.
- Zip Code Entry - The zip code entered with the shop address tells the ED-18 the region where it's located and allows regional information about temperatures and battery life to be relayed to the customer.
- Printer Attached to the Unit - The ED-18 is the only handheld battery conductance analyzer with an integrated printer. This makes printing the test result and communicating it to the customer much easier.
- Easy-load Printer - The thermal printer requires no ink. It takes only seconds to drop in a new roll of paper when required.
- Graphics Display and Printout - Graphics, not just words and numbers, make reading the test results easier for the technician and the consumer.
- Reporting Functions - These allow for tracking the number of tests performed over a certain period of time or by each technician. The technician ID allows you to track which technicians are doing the tests.
- Power Features - Back-up power for memory storage prevents loss of data when changing AA batteries.
